“...Which is the first of all the commandments? Jesus replied, ‘The first is this:... You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength. The second is this: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. There is no other commandment greater than these.’”
~ Mark 12:28, 29, 30-31
Dear Deacon Nguyen,
Did you ever ask a question and get multiple answers? The scribe in today’s Scripture reading asks Jesus one question and gets two responses!
Our Lord had just finished teaching about eternity in our resurrected bodies when the Sadducees—the religious of the day who denied the resurrection of the dead—posed a question about a fictitious woman who had been married many times. They wanted to know who her husband would be in heaven.
Jesus’ answer stopped them in their tracks, “...When they rise from the dead, they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but they are like the angels in heaven” (Mark 12:25)
Can you picture this backdrop as our scribe walks in?
He was most likely thinking, “I’ve got a trick question to trip up the great rabbi!” Instead Jesus gave him a masterful summation of the entire meaning of the Christian life—two answers for the price of one!
Why did our Lord volunteer more information than the scribe asked for? Because we can’t separate loving God from loving our neighbors.
My thoughts go to Maryknoll’s Father Joyalito Tajonera and his work with Philippine migrants in Taiwan. The two Ugnayan centers and shelters he runs reach out to foreign migrant workers, new immigrants, foreign spouses and their families. They provide free educational training to help the immigrants improve job skills and learn basic Chinese. They also rent buildings for church activities, training centers and shelters, and they advocate for migrant workers’ rights.Prayer for 31st Sunday in Ordinary Time
Oh Lord, there are so many
rules, laws, and commandments.
How can I ever hope to do Your Will
and live life to the full as You desire?
You taught us to love You
with all our hearts,
with all our minds,
and with all our strength,
and to love our neighbors as
we love ourselves.
Give me the grace and desire, Lord,
to truly love myself so that
I can sincerely love my neighbor
knowing that by loving them
I am in fact loving You,
and living life to the full.
In Jesus’ name.
Amen.~ Father Joseph R. Veneroso, M.M.
Dinh, what we do for our neighbor, we do for God. Imagine how much better the world would be if we could only obey these two-in-one commandments! Taken together, they sum up the whole of the law, and the whole of the life that is pleasing to God.
Sincerely yours in Christ,
