    CROSS-CULTURAL EVANGELIZATION
“I, Paul, ambassador of Christ and now a prisoner for Him, appeal to you for my child, whom I have begotten during my imprisonment.” —Philemon 9-10

Paul led Onesimus, a runaway slave and fellow prisoner, to the Lord (Phlm 10). Paul had also led Onesimus’ owner, Philemon, to the Lord (Phlm 19). Paul converted both slave and owner, both poor and rich. In his ministry of evangelization, Paul even did the unthinkable by converting both Jews and Gentiles.

Most people come to the Lord because of the witness of someone like them. It takes an amazing person to lead to the Lord people of different backgrounds. For example, most people who would identify with and have compassion for a runaway slave, don’t also relate to the slave-owner, or vice versa. It requires exceptional compassion to care about both the slave and the owner.

List the people you have been instrumental in leading to the Lord. If you observe significant differences in your converts’ ages, backgrounds, races, and economic status, then you have a love that covers a multitude of sins (1 Pt 4:8) and bridges the greatest gaps.

Evangelization is primarily a matter of deep love, and cross-cultural evangelization is a matter of even deeper love. May we love the lost more than we love ourselves. May we have a river of love so deep that it will cover not only those close and familiar to us, but also those far away and different from us.

Prayer: Father, may Your love impel me (2 Cor 5:14) to break new ground in sharing my faith.

Promise: “A time will come when you will long to see one day of the Son of Man but will not see it.” —Lk 17:22

Praise: Pope St. Leo the Great wrote: “In spite of the many parts of [Christ’s] holy body, the Church subsists as an integral Whole.”

“GLORIFY GOD IN YOUR BODY” (1 Cor 6:20)
“He was talking about the temple of His body.” —John 2:21: THÂN THỂ CHÚA

Today’s feast of the dedication of the Lateran Basilica in Rome is a way of acknowledging that God dwells among His people (see Jn 1:14). This feast reminds us of the beauty of God, that all beauty is a means to glorify God. A Church building is likewise a beautiful, holy house and from it flows many graces to bless the people of God.

Today’s feast is also a reminder that God dwells in our own bodies (Jn 6:56; 17:23). We are to dedicate the temple of our body to God’s service, just like the Lateran Basilica is dedicated to God’s use. We dedicate our bodies to the Lord to glorify God in them (1 Cor 6:20), so that we may be beautiful, good, holy, and true, a pleasing dwelling place consecrated to God. May each of us likewise be united to God and each other in faith, forming a holy building founded on Christ (1 Cor 3:9-11). Let God make you a temple of the Holy Spirit (1 Cor 6:19).

Prayer: Father, I offer my body to You to be dedicated to Your service (2 Tm 2:21; cf Rm 12:1).

Promise: “For the temple of God is holy, and you are that temple.” —1 Cor 3:17

Praise: A Latin inscription inside the Lateran Basilica in Rome, translated into English, means: “The mother and head of all churches of the city and of the world.”

    SAVE THE CHILDREN
“A presbyter must be irreproachable, married only once, the father of children who are believers and are known not to be wild and insubordinate.” —Titus 1:6

If you are a parent, you certainly want your children to be “believers,” “known not to be wild and insubordinate” (Ti 1:6). Yet some of the most committed Christians have children not under the lordship of Jesus. Why are many Christian parents unable to pass on their faith in Jesus to their own children?

Perhaps we may have compromised with the world. God’s Word tells us: “Have no love for the world, nor the things that the world affords” (1 Jn 2:15). Even the “strictest” parents have exposed their children to hours, even years, of ungodly influences through handheld electronic devices, TV, and modern education. We shrug off the effects of this constant bombardment, and then are surprised when our children do things which indicate almost no relationship with Christ.

Another reason for the devil’s success in robbing us of our own children is lack of family prayer. Most Christian couples don’t pray together frequently. Family prayer is often relegated to meal prayers when the family occasionally gets together for supper. We don’t receive because we don’t ask (Jas 4:2). We didn’t stay together because we didn’t pray together.

However, the good news is that there’s still time to get your children back to God. Remember St. Monica and her son St. Augustine. God promises: “Those who oppose you I will oppose, and your sons” and daughters “I will save” (Is 49:25).

Prayer: Father, may my faith be stronger than the devil’s discouragement. I believe every one of my children will accept Jesus as Lord and Savior.

Promise: “The apostles said to the Lord, ‘Increase our faith.’ ” —Lk 17:5

Praise: By letting her children know she prayed for them, Louise eventually saw them return to Mother Church and their heavenly Father.

    THE CELEBRATION OF THE WORD
“Your teaching must have the integrity of serious, sound words to which no one can take exception.” —Titus 2:8

Orthodox teaching based on the Bible is extremely important in leading people to Christ and building up the Church. False teaching is extremely destructive to our faith and to the Church. Therefore, we must “fight hard for the faith” (Jude 3) and “guard the rich deposit of faith with the help of the Holy Spirit Who dwells within us” (2 Tm 1:14). Furthermore, when we speak, we must be careful that our speech is “consistent with sound doctrine” (Ti 2:1). We should also act so that “the word of God will not fall into disrepute” (Ti 2:5). Even Christian employees should try to work extra hard for their employers so as “to please them in every way, not contradicting them nor stealing from them, but expressing a constant fidelity by their conduct, so as to adorn in every way possible the doctrine of God our Savior” (Ti 2:9-10). Whether we are teaching, fighting, guarding, speaking, acting, or working, we want to make sure we are helping people open up to God’s Word.

Our lives are so word-centered because God’s words are “spirit and life” (Jn 6:63). His words are the “joy and the happiness” of our hearts (Jer 15:16). “Ignorance of the Scriptures is ignorance of Christ” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 133, St. Jerome). “Not on bread alone is man to live but on every utterance that comes from the mouth of God” (Mt 4:4). God’s Word is “more precious than thousands of gold and silver pieces” (Ps 119:72). Our “rebirth has come, not from a destructible but from an indestructible seed, through the living and enduring word of God” (1 Pt 1:23). Praise You, Jesus, Word of God (Jn 1:1), for the Word of God!

Prayer: Father, may I meditate on Your Word day and night (Ps 1:2).

Promise: “It was He Who sacrificed Himself for us, to redeem us from all unrighteousness and to cleanse for Himself a people of His own, eager to do what is right.” —Ti 2:14

Praise: Robert’s life changed when God’s Word set his heart aflame. He now reads the Bible daily.

    GETTING A PROMOTION
“If you can trust a man in little things, you can also trust him in greater; while anyone unjust in a slight matter is also unjust in greater.” —Luke 16:10

Think of something you believe God wants you to do. You have thought about this for some time, but you have never been able to do it. What is the problem? Possibly you have not been faithful in small matters (see Lk 19:17) so that God has not promoted you to greater things.

For example, for decades we have been trying to stop abortion, reverse the seemingly relentless march of the culture of death, and replace it with a civilization of love and life. We are sure the Lord wants us to do this, but we have not been successful in doing it. Possibly we have not been faithful in smaller matters, such as praying with our spouses, shutting off the TV, putting down our handheld electronic device, going to Confession regularly, fasting frequently, speaking of Jesus at work, etc.

The Lord has “an eye for detail” — detailed obedience. If we are obedient across the board, we can do great things by bringing down the strongholds, lies, and pretensions of the evil one (2 Cor 10:4, 6). We can even make every thought captive to Jesus (2 Cor 10:5).

Jesus was faithful in small matters, such as many years of obscurity, family life, and manual labor. He was entrusted with the greatest work — the salvation of all people. Be faithful as Jesus was faithful.

Prayer: Father, may I do all the works You have planned for me (see Eph 2:10).

Promise: “What I say to you is this: Make friends for yourselves through your use of this world’s goods, so that when they fail you, a lasting reception will be yours.” —Lk 16:9

Praise: “In Him Who is the Source of my strength I have strength for everything” (Phil 4:13).
