SPIRITUAL COMBAT
Fourteen Sunday in Ordinary Time / C – 07/07/ 2019
Reflections on the Gospel (Lk 10:1-12, 17-20)
SPIRITUAL COMBAT
Today’s Gospel describes the second of two occasions on which Jesus sends out his disciples to proclaim the good news of the Kingdom. The sending sets a pattern for the missionary nature of Church.
The suggestions they receive suggest that, for the most part, they should not expect to receive a friendly response. The presupposition behind this is that the world has largely fallen out of the hand of God into the grip of spiritual forces hostile to God and to the true interests of human beings. The misssionaries, therefore, will not be operating on benign or even neutral ground; they have to retake enemy terrain.
Jesus’ specific instructions about going out lightly clad, taking no provisions, and so forth, reflect the conditions of the early Church. They do not translate literally into our situation today.
What remains totally relevant is both the nature of the combat faced and the richness of the gift that is brought. For combat with spiritual forces no amount of earthly protection will be of use. Like the armour of Saul that David first tried on before going out to face the Philistine giant, Goliath (1 Sam 17: 38-51), it will only get in the way and detract from being armed with the power of God.
Likewise, the missionaries can take the risk of hospitality, because any expenses their hosts might incur in putting them up will be negligible in comparison to the gift they bring: the invitation to the Kingdom and the messianic assurance of God’s ‘peace’ (Luke 2 14).
