BREAKING OPEN THE WORD
THE SEARCH FOR WISDOM (Luke 12:13-21)
When the author of Ecclesiastes declares that all is vanity it is important to know that the Hebrew word hebel refers to much more than vanity since it includes ideas of what is transitory, just a breath, and without substance. We all seek wisdom and meaning in a world that is often unjust and full of inconsistencies and paradoxes. As Christians, we look for that time when God will heal the wounds and injustices of our world and renew all creation. This was not the case when Ecclesiastes was written. At that time, there was no concept of an afterlife. The people believed that what was unresolved during our lives would stay that way, and understandably that provided a powerful and painful challenge for the people of Israel.
In both the first reading and in the parable of the rich fool, we can see that the saying holds true that ‘you can’t take it with you’. For all his wealth and fortune the wealthy man does not have the key to eternal life and his self-focus is shown to be sadly mistaken as he learns that the riches that endure to eternal life are of another kind altogether.
Paul reminds us that we have been raised with Christ and that our lives must reflect this. True wisdom is to be found in living lives with integrity, reflecting our identity as followers of Christ by the quality of our thought and actions. We have been brought into a new creation where our old prejudices and divisions must be left behind as we put on Christ anything that will not endure into eternal life.
